EPA Green Power Partnership issues On-site Renewables Challenge

In support of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan (PDF) and to further spur the market for green power, EPA’s Green Power Partnership will strive to double the use of on-site renewable energy at Partner facilities by the end of the decade.

To support this goal, EPA is pleased to announce a new initiative under the Green Power Partnership: the On-site Renewables Challenge. The Partnership will track all Partners’ annual combined on-site renewable energy use, which will be updated quarterly. As part of the Challenge, EPA invites Partners to increase the amount of energy they produce and use from on-site renewables by the end of the decade. Read more. Goodbye coal, hello geothermal
Coal-fired boilers have gone cold as Ball State continues conversion to geothermal.
Nearly 70 years after Ball State University installed its four coal-fired boilers, school employees have stopped shoveling and the old system has gone cold as the university embraces renewable energy with world’s largest district closed geothermal energy system.

Jim Lowe, director of engineering, construction and operations, watched the historic event. He’s overseen the $80 million geothermal project — consisting of 3,600 boreholes to the system that heats and cools 47 buildings on campus — since the first hole was drilled in 2009.
“It has been incredible to witness the progress over the last few years,” Lowe says. “I think we’ll realize the full extent of the changeover from consuming about 36,000 tons of coal a year to renewable energy when the two smoke stacks come down in 2015.” Read moreSource: Today's Energy Solution, 3/29/14

Energy Department Unveils FY15 Budget for Renewable Power

On April 1, the Geothermal Technologies Office presented its FY15 Budget Request to stakeholders, as part of a larger webinar on EERE's Renewable Power FY15 Budget Request.

The Geothermal Technologies Office funds more than 150 research, development, demonstration and analysis projects, representing over $500 million in total combined investment. NREL seeks applications for solar technical assistance

Supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), NREL's Solar Technical Assistance Team (STAT) works with cities and states to make policy and programmatic improvements that can open and develop markets for distributed generation, specifically solar rooftop photovoltaics. To access this free, unbiased, and location-specific expertise, please answer the 12 questions in the 2014-Round 2 application.

Applications for Round 2 are due on Friday, March 28 by midnight MST. Finalists will be announced on April 30, 2014. This will be the last round of technical assistance offered in fiscal year 2014, which ends on September 30, 2014.

SWCC March newsletter available

The Small Wind Certification Council continues to see new certifications and other certification activity, with our current tally at 10 wind turbine models carrying full or partial SWCC certifications.  In addition, SWCC recently obtained an increase in our accreditation scope, reflecting the new activities for medium wind certification.

Funding, Technical Assistance Available for State, Local, Tribal Governments

The Tribal Energy Program is pleased to share the following funding opportunities and information on an upcoming event for tribal leaders.

Nearly $618 million in funding and technical assistance is available for state, local, and tribal governments from the U.S. Departments of Energy, the Interior, and Transportation; Environmental Protection Agency; and Federal Transit Authority that can be used to support climate and energy initiatives, including economic development, sustainable communities, green infrastructure, and water efficiency.

Note that the Tribal Energy Program has added a new feature on its website highlighting hundreds of millions of dollars in funding opportunities available to tribes at a glance. New Funding Opportunity Open: Solar Market Pathways

The newly-released Solar Market Pathways funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks to support regional, state, tribal, and locally-driven efforts to develop multi-year solar deployment plans and help provide business certainty and establish a clear path for the next five to ten years of solar deployment. Specifically, this FOA is intended to enable replicable multi-year strategies that spur significant solar deployment, drive down solar soft costs, support local economic development efforts, and address the potential challenges arising from increased solar penetration on the electrical grid. Awardees are expected to convene stakeholder processes to develop their plan, and subgroups could address specific topics such as the net benefits and costs of solar electricity (to and from the grid), and/or develop solar deployment programs including, but not limited to, commercial property assessed clean energy financing, shared solar, and/or incorporating solar within their emergency response plans. DOE offers funding for water power manufacturing

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy intends to issue, on behalf of the Wind and Water Power Technologies Office, a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) entitled “Water Power Manufacturing”.

This FOA supports  the application of advanced materials and advanced manufacturing techniques to the development of new hydropower technologies.  With the significant advancements realized over the last decade, the application of advanced materials, and Computer Aided Design (CAD) driven, additive manufacturing technologies can effectively push the performance and speed the adoption of new hydropower technologies. Loan Guarantees Are Back: DOE Targets ‘Catalytic’ Grid Integration Technology

DOE prepares $4 billion for “catalytic, replicable, and market-ready” technologies to assist with change on the grid edge.

Three years after the Department of Energy issued its last loan guarantee to a renewable energy project, the program is officially back in action.

Ending a long hiatus, the DOE indicated in February that it would finally use the remaining $1.5 billion allocated by Congress for loans to clean energy project developers. Today, the department is announcing the first public step in that process: a solicitation for developers of battery storage, microgrids, efficiency and waste-to-energy projects that will "catalyze" the market.
